Hmm, OK, I'll post some stuff.

Re Fullmetal Alchemist, the anime was made after the manga became popular. They start out almost the same. However, the anime story had a definite end while the manga is still going, so the two diverged and became different stories. Characters were added to the anime, and the story took a different turn than the manga. Can't say much more than that without venturing into spoiler territory. Both are excellent, in my opinion, and as long as you don't break your brain needlessly cross-referencing them after the divergence you can enjoy them both.

One word of warning, though: FMA is not a gentle story. People get hurt. People die, sometimes horribly. And, like in real life, some stories don't have happy endings, with everything tied up with a neat little bow. That, I think, is one of its strengths - things aren't cushioned and happyfied for the reader. But it is never grim and gritty just for the sake of being tough and edgy, the way some series are.

The manga might be easier to get into, as it's easier to get the books. Although, you can get a lot of the DVDs pretty cheap used on Amazon. Whichever you choose, read the story in order. It will make little sense otherwise.

Ahh, A beautiful dove. The symbol of peace. How sweet. Perhaps I should feed it... To a CAT!

Thanks Negs,

I know about the anime....I've seen most of it (well most of the beginning and the end but missing some of the details in the middle) I've also seen the movie that finishes the story.

The anime is the reason why I'm interested in the books. I'm just wondering which would be better to get....... I just bought books 1 & 2 on eBay so maybe I'll wait and see what there like before I do anything :D

If you want to give me a little bit of an Idea about the difference in the story feel free to leave me a note, I don't mind a little bit of a spoiler ^_^
